To get to Old Government Trail #733, travel from the Darrington Ranger Station on Mountain Loop Highway for 19.4 miles to the trailhead on the left at Barlow Pass. A trail pass is required for this trail.
Best time of the year to hike Old Government Trail is around Summer and mid-Fall. The beginning elevation of the hike is 2400 feet and ends at 2100 feet. The trail will start at Barlow Point Trail #709 after a 0.3 miles. This route follows part of the Everett and Monte Cristo Railway grade and an old trail that runs parallel to the railroad. The hike offers a pleasant, short, lowland walk for those that aren't into the steep incline hikes.
