North Cascades Recreation and Trail Guide

Canyon Lake Trail
Mountain Loop Highway

To get to Canyon Lake Trail # 797 you must travel up the Mountain Loop Highway, leaving the small town of Granite Falls.

Turn right off the highway onto Suaittle River Road # 26. Travel another 22.6 miles to the Suaittle River Trail #784 trailhead.

This trail is not maintained and is a strenuous, difficult hike suggested for more experienced hikers. It is a 6 mile hike, one way, and takes about 3.5 hours. The trailhead elevation sits at 6050 feet.

The trail starts uphill after circling Image Lake. It continues uphill then drops over Plummer Mountain, passing the basin of Sitting Bull Mountain. Obviously,

thus far you've already come across spectacular scenery of one lake and a couple beautiful mountain sides. After 3.5 miles of hiking you will progress steadily uphill reaching higher elevations. You'll pass by small streams of water lined with pretty flowers and berry bushes. There are also very appreciated designated sitting areas made of wood. The last mile consists of steep downhill manner which drops you into the beautiful basin lined with waterfalls, surrounding the even more gorgeous lake.

Here there are camping sites available and toilets as well.
